Post:Clinical Legal Volunteer
Organization: Hong Kong Refugee Advice Centre
Location:Sai Ying Pun
Purpose of position:

To contribute to the operation of HKRAC’s university clinical legal education programmes and the provision of HKRAC’s services

Duration of position:
6 months (Full-time, January - June 2014)

Reporting relationships:
The Clinical Legal Volunteer reports to the Staff Attorney (Clinical Programmes) for all matters related to HKRAC’s university clinical legal education programmes, and to the Legal Director for all other matters.

Responsibilities:
• Contribute to developing and delivering training and assigning, supervising, and reviewing work by university clinic students as part of overall HKRAC refugee legal aid service provision
• Conduct research on international best practice in clinical legal education programming in conjunction with the Staff Attorney (Clinical Programmes)
• Conduct interviews with prospective and existing clients, conduct legal and factual (including country of origin) research, and write interview- and research-based reports
• Contribute to HKRAC’s monitoring and evaluation system
• Contribute to maintaining positive working relationships internally and externally
• Perform other duties as assigned by the Staff Attorney (Clinical Programmes) and the Legal Director

Requirements:

Essential:

• Law student or law graduate
• Demonstrated interest in refugee or human rights issues
• Excellent oral and written communication and research skills
• Well-organised, able to work independently
• Fluent in spoken and written English
• Willing and able to live in Hong Kong for the duration of the placement, without financial remuneration

Desirable:
• Experience in training and supervision
• Experience in tutoring or lecturing
• Experience working with refugees or other vulnerable and/or displaced people
• Fluency in Arabic, French, Sinhalese, Somali, Tamil, Tigrinya, Urdu or other refugee languages
