Group Summary The Communications Group contributes to advocacy efforts, raise awareness of the issues the foundation addresses, work to protect and advance the foundation's reputation, and oversee all internal and external communications functions.

Responsibilities

The Deputy Director (DD) of Communications in China will develop and execute communications strategies that support the foundation's program and advocacy goals in global health and global development in China. This will include leveraging the voice of the co-chairs and foundation leadership to drive change on the global stage. The DD will lead a small communications team of staff and consultants in country/region. The qualified candidate will also lead coordination of the China communications strategy with the foundation's global communications strategy. Specific responsibilities are listed below.

- Develop and execute innovative and creative communications strategies designed to reach diverse audiences across China that are critical to the success of the foundation's program and advocacy strategies.
- Lead development of regionally tailored messaging that effectively conveys the reasons, aspirations and goals of the foundation's work with stakeholders in country, as well as the progress and accumulated knowledge of current foundation programs.
- Advise the China Country Director and team on all communications matters and coordinate with Communications leadership in Seattle on global strategy.
- Monitor internal and external programs groups and philanthropic developments to identify and communicate connections between the foundation and sector trends in country.
- Lead China-specific crisis communications , reputation and issues management planning, in coordination and consultation with the Global Press Secretary and team in Seattle.
- Manage workflow, budget, and staff, including work outsourced to communications agencies.
- Lead clear and consistent communications with grantees and partners in the field.
- Engage with news media on behalf of regional/country leadership and foundation leadership.
- Oversee all media relationship management, news monitoring, drafting and dissemination of press materials, media training and media coaching for the China office.
- Support relationship management strategy with key stakeholders in China, including government officials, grantees, opinion leaders, foundations, NGOs, multilateral organization, the private sector and others.
- Work with the Communications team in Seattle to generate a positive media environment for the foundation's programs and its leadership and ensure alignment of internal and external China communications.
- Work with Seattle-based social media team to leverage channels to create a positive image for the foundation and its work.

Qualifications

- Language skills: Fluency is required in Mandarin and English.
- Bachelor's degree is required and a relevant Graduate degree is preferred.
- 15+ years of experience in Public Relations and Public Affairs is required. Some communications agency experience preferred.
- 7+ years of experience in China, in a communications role, is required. Additionally, some relevant international exposure external to China is also required; ideally this will include experience abroad. Experience directly interacting with a Western organization is also required.
- Seasoned communications professional with experience working directly with and advising high profile individuals, working in government, public affairs, and/or corporate communications roles aimed at influencing policy change.
- Demonstrated success in developing the strategy for and managing communications initiatives and campaigns in support of policy initiatives, advocacy programs and events.
- Deep understanding of the Chinese media market and strong working relationships with Chinese and Western journalists and news organizations.
- Experience working with top-tier media in region/country and experience serving as spokesperson for a significant, high-profile organization such as a major non-profit entity, government agency, or corporation.
- Strong written and oral communication skills and experience developing and implementing communications strategies targeting broad and diverse audiences, including experience preparing communication material with complex subject matter.
- Demonstrated analytical and interpersonal skills.
- Managerial experience and demonstrated effectiveness and interest in leading, coordinating and developing colleagues from across a variety of disciplines in a complex organization.
- Substantial exposure to political issues (domestic and international), where significant discretion and judgment must be exercised.
- Must reside in or be willing to relocate to Beijing, China.
- Ability to travel within region and to the U.S. at least 20%.
